Googies is successful start-up restaurant-bar and coffee shop in Folkestone established during 2009. Googies is a casual dining experience with a bar offering a selection of craft beers from Brewdog, local beers, cocktails and wines.

Our business

We are a restaurant bar offering burgers BBQ Grill and in house smoked meats. Coffee shop by day, breakfasts both English and American in the morning. We pride ourselves with using ingredients of excellent provenance including local free range, grass fed Dexter beef for which we have become well known for.

Location – Folkestone

At the time of opening, there were just a handful of restaurants in Folkestone. We wanted to create a dining/coffee experience that at the time one rarely found outside of London. The promise of regeneration from the Creative Foundation and the now established fast link to London were seen to be beneficial for a town that had for so long felt to be forgotten and neglected. We felt that a business like Googies could be a real benefit to the town.

Advantages of Folkestone

The regeneration of Folkestone is well documented, many people have moved and continue to move into the area. Being a seaside town, many tourists visit especially during the spring and summer months, with a fast link to London, Folkestone has begun to see an increase in the number of day trippers.

Funding Support

The continual development of Folkestone has seen increased funding of projects both from the private and public sector. The area where Googies is based has seen funding and grants given to improve the buildings in the area. This has seen the regeneration of the area, where once was dilapidated buildings one now sees businesses moving in. This in turn makes the area much more vibrant that increases benefits to the business.

Advice for start-ups

Do your homework, find out if there is a real need for your start-up idea, careful planning and budgeting. Remember it is a seaside town so it can be quiet during the working week as many people who have moved down from London will often work in London during the week. Speak to relevant departments within Shepway such as planning/environmental health etc, they are there to help and will always follow current legislation.
