Turning Point For New Homes

Plans for new council homes took a step forward when Cllr David Monk, the Leader of Folkestone and Hythe District Council, joined partners for a sod turning ceremony to mark the start of the project.

Cllr Monk was welcomed to the site of the old Shepway Resource Centre in Military Road, Folkestone, by Martin Sandall, Director of Jenner Contractors Ltd, which is building the homes in partnership with the council.

When completed in spring 2018, 35 of the 41 homes will be offered by the council to people through its waiting list, with the remaining six being kept by Jenner.

They are the latest in the council’s new-build programme and the first on such a large scale. Other council homes have already been built at Lydd and Hawkinge and more are planned as part of the council’s commitment to provide affordable homes to local people.

Cllr Monk said: “This makes excellent use of what was a redundant site. It’s not only providing much-needed new homes, but is sustainable in the true sense of the word. Old materials are being saved and used again and it’s giving a new lease of life to a brownfield site. I look forward to the new residents moving into these homes.”
